Action planning

Action planning involves setting targets for yourself and deciding how you will achieve them. Making a career action plan involves making decisions and planning your future. It will help you focus on your career aims and the steps you need to take to achieve them.

To make a good action plan, you need to know what sort of work you are interested in. If you haven’t done so already, visit the you and your career pages on this website first. Those pages tell you about the kind of things you need to think about before you can make a career action plan.

An action plan will help you to:

  • Make a record of your achievements
  • Decide your career aims
  • Work out what you need to do to achieve your aims
  • Take a step-by-step approach to plan for your future
  • Apply for jobs, courses or further education

You can make an action plan on your own. But you might find it easier to work with someone else, such as a teacher, a careers adviser, a relative, or even a friend. They can ask questions to help you decide your aims. They can also help you to list the practical steps you need to take to achieve your aims.
